LAW ENFORCEMENT
DIVE TRAINING

The Diver Training Program is a progressive, tiered system designed specifically for law enforcement personnel. It builds divers from foundational open water skills through advanced public safety operations, preparing them for real-world response, teamwork, and leadership in aquatic search, rescue, and recovery missions.

 

This program is offered in partnership with Sport Divers of Houston, an established SSI training center, combining professional dive instruction with real-world law enforcement operational support.

Not all agencies have the same operational needs. Some departments may only require divers for evidence recovery from small bodies of water, while others must support complex missions in hazardous or contaminated environments. This program allows for scalable, mission-appropriate training based on agency requirements and individual diver progression.

Law Enforcement Diver I

Objective: Establish fundamental dive skills and certification.

Includes Certification In:

• SSI Open Water Diver

• Computer Diving

• Perfect Buoyancy

• Enriched Air Nitrox

Key Notes:

• LE Diver 1 graduates are recognized as certified recreational divers with added focus on precision buoyancy and dive planning tools.

• LE Diver 1 divers participate in public safety dive operations as team members under the supervision of more experienced public safety divers, allowing them to gain on-the-job experience in real-world missions.

Law Enforcement Diver II

Objective: Equip divers with intermediate-level rescue, navigation, and recovery skills essential to public safety missions.

Includes Certification In:

• Rescue Diver

• Underwater Navigation

• Search and Recovery

• CPR, AED & Oxygen Provider

Key Notes:

• LE Diver 2 divers can assist in more complex missions and begin assuming greater operational responsibilities, including locating submerged evidence, assisting in victim recovery, and leading small team tasks under supervision.

Public Safety Diver (PSD)

Objective: Complete the full PSD training pathway and develop operational readiness for law enforcement diving.

Includes:

• Integration of prior certifications into real-world public safety diving operations

• Training on low-visibility diving, evidence handling, scene preservation, and contaminated water operations

• Exposure to agency-specific protocols, dive planning, and incident documentation

Graduates of this level are certified Public Safety Divers, ready to operate in diverse conditions and capable of functioning independently as part of a dive team under supervision.

Dive Supervisor & Beyond

Objective: Prepare experienced PSDs for leadership and supervisory roles within a dive team.

Pathway Includes:

• SSI Divemaster Certification

• Additional training in leadership, team management, briefings, and incident command principles

Dive Supervisors oversee team safety, assign dive roles, lead mission planning, and serve as the primary liaison with law enforcement leadership and emergency response personnel.
